On the day of Ashura, while he was on the pulpit, he said, "People of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say on this day, 'I am fasting, so whoever wishes to fast, let him fast.'"
أخبرنا قتيبة عن سفيان عن الزهري عن حميد بن عبد الرحمن بن عوف قال
يوم عاشوراء وهو على المنبر يقول يا أهل المدينة أين علماؤكم سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول في هذا اليوم إني صائم فمن شاء أن يصوم فليصم
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Fasting, chapter on fasting the day of Ashura, no. 1129, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Fasting, chapter on fasting the day of Ashura, no. 2003, from the hadith of Zuhri, through the same chain. It is also in Al-Kubra, no. 2680.
