The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Fasting is a shield, like the shield one of you wears in battle."
أخبرنا قتيبة قال حدثنا الليث عن يزيد بن أبي حبيب عن سعيد بن أبي هند أن مطرفا رجلا من بني عامر بن صعصعة حدثه أن عثمان بن أبي العاص دعا له بلبن ليسقيه فقال مطرف إني صائم فقال
رسول الله ﷺ يقول الصيام جنة كجنة أحدكم من القتال
[Its chain is sahih] Ibn Majah reported it in the Book of Fasting, in the chapter on what has been said about the merit of fasting, no. 1639, from the hadith of Layth bin Saad, through the same route. It is also found in al-Kubra, no. 2539. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 2125, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 931.
