The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned the crescent moon and said, "When you see it, begin fasting, and when you see it, end your fast. If it is obscured from you, then count thirty days."
أخبرنا أبو بكر بن علي صاحب حمص قال حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة قال حدثنا محمد بن بشر قال حدثنا عبيد الله عن أبي الزناد عن الأعرج
ذكر رسول الله ﷺ الهلال فقال إذا رأيتموه فصوموا وإذا رأيتموه فأفطروا فإن غم عليكم فعدوا ثلاثين
Muslim reported it in the Book of Fasting, chapter on the obligation of fasting Ramadan upon sighting the crescent, no. 20/1081, from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, with this chain, and it is also in al-Kubra, no. 2433.
