The Prophet ﷺ used to encourage standing in prayer during Ramadan without making it obligatory, and he said, "When Ramadan enters, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up during it." Ibn Mubarak narrated it in mursal form.
أخبرنا أبو بكر بن علي قال حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة قال حدثنا عبد الأعلى عن معمر عن الزهري عن أبي سلمة
أن النبي ﷺ كان يرغب في قيام رمضان من غير عزيمة وقال إذا دخل رمضان فتحت أبواب الجنة وغلقت أبواب الجحيم وسلسلت فيه الشياطين أرسله ابن المبارك
Muslim narrated it in "Prayer of the Traveler," chapter on encouraging the night prayer of Ramadan, which is tarawih, hadith no. 174/759, from the hadith of Muamar bin Rashid with this wording. It is also in Kubra, hadith no. 2414.
