I heard Nafi claim that Ibn Umar prayed over nine funerals together. He placed the men nearest the imam and the women nearest the qiblah, arranging them in a single row.The body of Umm Kulthum bint Ali, the wife of Umar bin Khattab, was placed there along with a son of hers named Zayd. They were placed together, and the imam that day was Saeed bin al-As, with Ibn Umar, Abu Hurairah, Abu Saeed, and Abu Qatada among the people present. The boy was placed nearest to the imam.A man said, "I found that strange, so I looked toward Ibn Abbas, Abu Hurairah, Abu Saeed, and Abu Qatada and asked, 'What is this?'"They replied, "This is the Sunnah."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It is found in Sunan al-Kubra, hadith 2105, and in Musannaf Abdul-Razzaq, 3/465, hadith 6337, with a slight difference, where Ibn Abbas is mentioned instead of Ibn Umar.Umm Kulthum bint Ali died after the year fifty, in 54 AH. This hadith shows the error of those who claimed that Abu Qatada died in 38 AH. Rather, the truth is that he died in 54 AH, as I established in Nur Ainayn, pages 80–81, on the authority of Ibn Main, Bayhaqi, and others.
