The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, "Your brother the Negus has died, so stand and pray over him." So we stood and formed rows behind him as one forms rows over the deceased, and we prayed over him as one prays over the deceased.
أخبرنا إسمعيل بن مسعود قال حدثنا بشر بن المفضل قال حدثنا يونس عن محمد بن سيرين عن أبي المهلب
قال لنا رسول الله ﷺ إن أخاكم النجاشي قد مات فقوموا فصلوا عليه قال فقمنا فصففنا عليه كما يصف على الميت وصلينا عليه كما يصلى على الميت
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Funerals, chapter on takbir over the funeral prayer, hadith 953, from the hadith of Abu Muhallab, Tirmidhi, hadith 1039, and Ibn Majah, hadith 1535, from the hadith of Bishr bin Mufaddal through the same route, and it is in Kubra, hadith 2102.
