Thumama bin Uthal al-Hanafi went to a date palm grove near the mosque, performed a full bath, then entered the mosque and said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. Muhammad, by Allah, there was no face on earth more hateful to me than yours, but now your face has become the most beloved of all faces to me. Your cavalry captured me while I was intending to perform the lesser pilgrimage, so what do you advise?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him glad tidings and instructed him to perform the lesser pilgrimage. أخبرنا قتيبة قال حدثنا الليث عن سعيد بن أبي سعيد أنه سمع
إن ثمامة بن أثال الحنفي انطلق إلى نجل قريب من المسجد فاغتسل ثم دخل المسجد فقال أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأن محمدا عبده ورسوله يا محمد والله ما كان على الأرض وجه أبغض إلي من وجهك فقد أصبح وجهك أحب الوجوه كلها إلي وإن خيلك أخذتني وأنا أريد العمرة فماذا ترى فبشره رسول الله ﷺ وأمره أن يعتمر مختصر
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Prayer, Chapter on Bathing When One Becomes Muslim and Also Tying Up the Captive in the Masjid, Hadith: 462, and Muslim in the Book of Jihad, Chapter on Tying Up the Captive and Detaining Him and the Permissibility of Showing Him Favor, Hadith: 1764, from Qutayba through this same chain, and it is found in Kubra, Hadith: 194.
