He reported that some people sighted the crescent moon and came to the Prophet ﷺ. He instructed them to break their fast, even though the day had already advanced, and to come out the following morning for the Eid prayer.
أخبرنا عمرو بن علي قال حدثنا يحيى قال حدثنا شعبة قال حدثنا أبو بشر عن أبي عمير بن أنس
له أن قوما رأوا الهلال فأتوا النبي ﷺ فأمرهم أن يفطروا بعد ما ارتفع النهار وأن يخرجوا إلى العيد من الغد
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Majah narrated it in the Book of Fasting, chapter on what has been mentioned regarding testimony about sighting the crescent moon, hadith no. 1653, from the hadith of Abu Bishr Jafar bin Abu Wahshiya, and it is found in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 1756. Bayhaqi graded it sahih at 3/316, as did Ibn Hazm in Al-Muhalla (5/92), Ibn Hibban, and Nawawi in Al-Khulasa, while Daraqutni graded it hasan at 2/170.
