"Which of you prayed the prayer of fear with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"Hudhayfah replied, "I did," and he described it.He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the prayer of fear with one group lined up behind him in a single row, while another group stood between him and the enemy. He prayed one rakah with the group nearest to him, then they withdrew to take the position of the others, and the others came forward, and he prayed one rakah with them."
أخبرنا إسحق بن إبراهيم قال حدثنا وكيع قال حدثنا سفيان عن الأشعث بن أبي الشعثاء عن الأسود بن هلال عن ثعلبة بن زهدم قال كنا مع سعيد بن العاصي بطبرستان ومعنا
أيكم صلى مع رسول الله ﷺ صلاة الخوف فقال حذيفة أنا فوصف فقال صلى رسول الله ﷺ صلاة الخوف بطائفة ركعة صف خلفه وطائفة أخرى بينه وبين العدو فصلى بالطائفة التي تليه ركعة ثم نكص هؤلاء إلى مصاف أولئك وجاء أولئك فصلى بهم ركعة
[Sahih] Reported by Abu Dawud, Prayer, chapter on those who said the imam prays one rakat with each group and they do not make it up, hadith 1246, from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, with this wording, and he explicitly stated that he heard it directly. It is also in Kubra, hadith 1917. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, hadith 1343, as did Ibn Hibban, hadith 586, and Hakim, 1/335, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
