A man from the people of Basra reported that he attended a sermon one day delivered by Samura bin Jundab, in which he related a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Samura bin Jundab said, "One day, during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a young man from the Ansar and I were shooting at our targets. When the sun was, in the eye of the observer, about the height of two or three spears above the horizon, it darkened.One of us said to the other, 'Let us go to the mosque, for by Allah, the state of this sun will surely cause the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to say something significant to his community.'So we hurried to the mosque, and we arrived just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to the people. He stepped forward and led the prayer. He stood for what was the longest standing he had ever led us in during any prayer, and we could not hear his voice. Then he bowed with us in what was the longest bowing he had ever led us in during any prayer, and we could not hear his voice. Then he prostrated with us in what was the longest prostration he had ever led us in during any prayer, and we could not hear his voice. Then he did the same in the second rakah.The clearing of the sun coincided with his sitting in the second rakah. He gave the salam, then praised Allah and extolled Him, bore witness that there is no god but Allah, and bore witness that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger."Abridged.
أخبرنا هلال بن العلاء بن هلال قال حدثنا الحسين بن عياش قال حدثنا زهير قال حدثنا الأسود بن قيس قال
من أهل البصرة أنه شهد خطبة يوما لسمرة بن جندب فذكر في خطبته حديثا عن رسول الله ﷺ قال سمرة بن جندب بينا أنا يوما وغلام من الأنصار نرمي غرضين لنا على عهد رسول الله ﷺ حتى إذا كانت الشمس قيد رمحين أو ثلاثة في عين الناظر من الأفق اسودت فقال أحدنا لصاحبه انطلق بنا إلى المسجد فوالله ليحدثن شأن هذه الشمس لرسول الله ﷺ في أمته حدثا قال فدفعنا إلى المسجد قال فوافينا رسول الله ﷺ حين خرج إلى الناس قال فاستقدم فصلى فقام كأطول قيام قام بنا في صلاة قط ما نسمع له صوتا ثم ركع بنا كأطول ركوع ما ركع بنا في صلاة قط ما نسمع له صوتا ثم سجد بنا كأطول سجود ما سجد بنا في صلاة قط لا نسمع له صوتا ثم فعل ذلك في الركعة الثانية مثل ذلك قال فوافق تجلي الشمس جلوسه في الركعة الثانية فسلم فحمد الله وأثنى عليه وشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وشهد أنه عبد الله ورسوله مختصر
[Its chain is hasan] Abu Dawud reported it in the Book of Prayer, chapter on whoever said four rakahs, no. 1184, from the hadith of Zuhayr, transmitted in the same manner. Tirmidhi reported it, no. 562, and said, "hasan sahih gharib." It is also in his Kubra, no. 1869. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 1397, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 597 and 598. Hakim graded it according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs, 1/329–331, and Dhahabi agreed with him. Hafiz also graded it sahih in Isabah, 4/26 (in the biography of Abu Yahya).
