Muawiya bin Hakam reported,

I said, "Messenger of Allah, we are a people who recently emerged from the age of ignorance, and Allah has brought us Islam. Yet there are men among us who practice divination by omens."He replied, "That is something they find in their hearts, so let it not deter them."I said, "And there are men among us who go to soothsayers."He said, "Do not go to them."I said, "Messenger of Allah, and there are men among us who draw lines in the sand for divination."He said, "There was a prophet among the prophets who used to draw lines. So whoever's lines match his, that is correct."He continued, While I was praying with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man from the congregation sneezed, so I said, "May Allah have mercy on you." The people glared at me with their eyes, so I said, "May my mother lose me, what is the matter with you that you look at me this way?" They began striking their hands on their thighs. When I saw them trying to silence me, I fell quiet.When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer, may my father and mother be sacrificed for him, he called me. He neither struck me, nor scolded me harshly, nor insulted me. I have never seen a teacher before him or after him better at instruction than he was.He said, "This prayer of ours is not fitting for any of the speech of people. It is only glorification, magnification, and recitation of the Quran."Then I said, Messenger of Allah, I had recently come from the age of ignorance, and Allah has brought Islam. I had a flock of sheep that a slave girl of mine used to tend in the area facing Mount Uhud and Jawwaniya. One day I went out and found that a wolf had taken a sheep from the flock. I am a man from the sons of Adam, and I become angry as they become angry, so I struck her a blow. Then I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. He considered what I had done a serious matter, so I said, "Messenger of Allah, shall I not free her?"He said, "Bring her to me."So I brought her, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Where is Allah ?"She replied, "Above the sky."He asked, "Who am I?"She said, "You are the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He said, "She is a believer, so free her."

عن معاوية بن الحكم السلمي قال

قلت يا رسول الله إنا حديث عهد بجاهلية فجاء الله بالإسلام وإن رجالا منا يتطيرون قال ذاك شيء يجدونه في صدورهم فلا يصدنهم ورجال منا يأتون الكهان قال فلا تأتوهم قال يا رسول الله ورجال منا يخطون قال كان نبي من الأنبياء يخط فمن وافق خطه فذاك قال وبينا أنا مع رسول الله ﷺ في الصلاة إذ عطس رجل من القوم فقلت يرحمك الله فحدقني القوم بأبصارهم فقلت وا ثكل أمياه ما لكم تنظرون إلي قال فضرب القوم بأيديهم على أفخاذهم فلما رأيتهم يسكتوني لكني سكت فلما انصرف رسول الله ﷺ دعاني بأبي وأمي هو ما ضربني ولا كهرني ولا سبني ما رأيت معلما قبله ولا بعده أحسن تعليما منه قال إن صلاتنا هذه لا يصلح فيها شيء من كلام الناس إنما هو التسبيح والتكبير وتلاوة القرآن قال ثم اطلعت إلى غنيمة لي ترعاها جارية لي في قبل أحد والجوانية وإني اطلعت فوجدت الذئب قد ذهب منها بشاة وأنا رجل من بني آدم آسف كما يأسفون فصككتها صكة ثم انصرفت إلى رسول الله ﷺ فأخبرته فعظم ذلك علي فقلت يا رسول الله أفلا أعتقها قال ادعها فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ أين الله عز وجل قالت في السماء قال فمن أنا قالت أنت رسول الله ﷺ قال إنها مؤمنة فاعتقها
