He declared Hakeem bin Jubayr and Abdul-Ala weak, and Yahya declared Musa bin Dinar weak, saying that his hadith is mere wind. He also declared weak Musa bin Dahqan and Isa bin Abu Isa al-Madani.He said, I heard al-Hasan bin Isa say, Ibn Mubarak told me, "When you arrive to study with Jareer, write down all of his knowledge except the hadith of three men. Do not write the hadith of Ubayda bin Muattib, Sari bin Ismail, and Muhammad bin Salim."Muslim said, Statements like those we have cited from the people of knowledge concerning suspect hadith narrators and their reports about such narrators' faults are numerous, and recording them all would make this book too long. What we have mentioned is sufficient for anyone who understands and grasps the approach of these scholars in what they said and clarified on this subject. They obligated themselves to expose the defects of hadith narrators and transmitters of reports, and they issued rulings on this when asked, because of the gravity of the matter. Reports concerning religious affairs convey what is permitted or forbidden, what is commanded or prohibited, and what encourages or warns. So if the narrator is not a person of truthfulness and trustworthiness, and then someone who knows this proceeds to narrate from him without disclosing his condition to others who are unaware, that person is sinful in his action and deceives the common Muslims. For there is no guarantee that some of those who hear such reports will not act upon them, or upon some of them, when perhaps they, or most of them, are falsehoods with no basis. This is especially so given that authentic reports from the narration of trustworthy and reliable people are far more numerous than to compel anyone to transmit from one who is neither trustworthy nor satisfactory.I do not think that many of those who incline toward such weak hadiths and obscure chains as we have described, and who give weight to narrating them despite knowing their feebleness and weakness, do so for any reason other than the desire to make a great show before the common people, so that it may be said, "How abundant is what so-and-so has gathered of hadith and how vast a collection he has compiled."Whoever pursues knowledge by this path and follows this route has no share in it. Such a person deserves more to be called ignorant than to be ascribed to learning.
