I was sitting with Abdullah and Abu Musa when Abu Musa said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, what do you think if a man becomes sexually impure and cannot find water for a month? What should he do about prayer?"Abdullah replied, "He should not perform tayammum, even if he cannot find water for a month."Abu Musa said, "Then what about this verse in Surah al-Maidah, 'and you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth' [Maidah 5:6]?"Abdullah answered, "If they were granted this concession in this verse, it would be likely that whenever the water felt cold to them, they would perform tayammum with earth."Abu Musa said to Abdullah, "Have you not heard the statement of Ammar? He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand, and I became sexually impure but could not find water, so I rolled in the dust the way an animal does. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned this to him, and he said, "It would have sufficed you to do this with your hands." Then he struck the ground once with his hands, then wiped the left over the right and the backs of his palms and his face.'"Abdullah replied, "Do you not see that Umar was not satisfied with Ammar's report?"
حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى وأبو بكر بن أبي شيبة وابن نمير جميعا عن أبي معاوية قال أبو بكر حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش
كنت جالسا مع عبد الله وأبي موسى فقال أبو موسى يا أبا عبد الرحمن أرأيت لو أن رجلا أجنب فلم يجد الماء شهرا كيف يصنع بالصلاة فقال عبد الله لا يتيمم وإن لم يجد الماء شهرا فقال أبو موسى فكيف بهذه الآية في سورة المائدة {فلم تجدوا ماء فتيمموا صعيدا طيبا} فقال عبد الله لو رخص لهم في هذه الآية لأوشك إذا برد عليهم الماء أن يتيمموا بالصعيد فقال أبو موسى لعبد الله ألم تسمع قول عمار بعثني رسول الله ﷺ في حاجة فأجنبت فلم أجد الماء فتمرغت في الصعيد كما تمرغ الدابة ثم أتيت النبي ﷺ فذكرت ذلك له فقال إنما كان يكفيك أن تقول بيديك هكذا ثم ضرب بيديه الأرض ضربة واحدة ثم مسح الشمال على اليمين وظاهر كفيه ووجهه فقال عبد الله أولم تر عمر لم يقنع بقول عمار
