Mahmud bin Ghaylan reported,

Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi was asked, "You have narrated extensively from Abbad bin Mansur, so why did you not hear from him the hadith of the perfume-seller which Nadr bin Shumayl related to us?"He replied, "Be quiet. I met Ziyad bin Maymun, along with Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi, and we questioned him. We said to him, 'These hadiths that you narrate from Anas...'He said, 'What do you think of a man who sins and then repents? Does Allah not accept his repentance?'We said, 'Yes.'He said, 'I have not heard anything from Anas about this, neither little nor much. If people do not know it, surely the two of you know that I never met Anas.'"Abu Dawud said, "Later it reached us that he was still narrating, so Abdul-Rahman and I went to him. He said, 'I repent.' But afterwards he continued to narrate, so we abandoned him."

قال قلت لأبي داود الطيالسي قد أكثرت عن عباد بن منصور فما لك لم تسمع منه حديث العطارة الذي روى لنا النضر بن شميل قال لي اسكت فأنا لقيت زياد بن ميمون وعبد الرحمن بن مهدي فسألناه فقلنا له هذه الأحاديث التي ترويها عن أنس فقال أرأيتما رجلا يذنب فيتوب أليس يتوب الله عليه قال قلنا نعم. قال ما سمعت من أنس من ذا قليلا ولا كثيرا إن كان لا يعلم الناس فأنتما لا تعلمان أني لم ألق أنسا. قال أبو داود فبلغنا بعد أنه يروي فأتيناه أنا وعبد الرحمن فقال أتوب. ثم كان بعد يحدث. فتركناه.
