A group of Muslims came across a man tending his small flock of sheep. He greeted them, saying, "Peace be upon you." But they seized him, killed him, and took the flock. Then this verse was revealed, "Do not say to the one who offers you peace, 'You are not a believer.'" [Nisa 4:94]. Ibn Abbas recited the word as "al-salam" (peace).
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة وإسحق بن إبراهيم وأحمد بن عبدة الضبي واللفظ لابن أبي شيبة قال حدثنا و قال الآخران أخبرنا سفيان عن عمرو عن عطاء
لقي ناس من المسلمين رجلا في غنيمة له فقال السلام عليكم فأخذوه فقتلوه وأخذوا تلك الغنيمة فنزلت {ولا تقولوا لمن ألقى إليكم السلم لست مؤمنا} وقرأها ابن عباس {السلام}
