We were traveling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when late afternoon came and we drew near one of the watering places of the Arabs, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who will go ahead of us and seal the basin with clay, then drink and give us to drink?"Jabir said, So I got up and said, "Here is a man for that, Messenger of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "And which man will go with Jabir?"Jabbar bin Sakhr stood up, and we set off to the well. We drew a bucket or two into the basin, then plastered it with clay, then drew water into it until we had filled it to the brim.The first to come upon us was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Do you two permit me?"We said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."So he led his she-camel forward and she drank. Then he pulled up her head, and she spread her legs and urinated. Then he turned her aside and made her kneel. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the basin and performed wudu from it, and I got up and performed wudu from the water the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had used.Jabbar bin Sakhr went off to relieve himself, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to pray. I was wearing a cloak, and I tried to cross its two ends over each other, but it was not long enough for me. It had fringes at its edges, so I turned it upside down, then crossed its two ends, then hunched my neck to hold it in place. Then I came and stood on the left of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He took me by the hand and turned me around until he had placed me on his right.Then Jabbar bin Sakhr came, performed wudu, and came and stood on the left of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took us both by the hand and pushed us back until he had placed us behind him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept glancing at me without my noticing, then I became aware of him, and he gestured with his hand like this, meaning, tie it around your waist.When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished, he said, "Jabir!"I said, "At your service, Messenger of Allah."He said, "When it is wide, cross its two ends over each other, and when it is narrow, tie it around your waist."
سرنا مع رسول الله ﷺ حتى إذا كانت عشيشية ودنونا ماء من مياه العرب قال رسول الله ﷺ من رجل يتقدمنا فيمدر الحوض فيشرب ويسقينا قال جابر فقمت فقلت هذا رجل يا رسول الله فقال رسول الله ﷺ أي رجل مع جابر فقام جبار بن صخر فانطلقنا إلى البئر فنزعنا في الحوض سجلا أو سجلين ثم مدرناه ثم نزعنا فيه حتى أفهقناه فكان أول طالع علينا رسول الله ﷺ فقال أتأذنان قلنا نعم يا رسول الله فأشرع ناقته فشربت شنق لها فشجت فبالت ثم عدل بها فأناخها ثم جاء رسول الله ﷺ إلى الحوض فتوضأ منه ثم قمت فتوضأت من متوضإ رسول الله ﷺ فذهب جبار بن صخر يقضي حاجته فقام رسول الله ﷺ ليصلي وكانت علي بردة ذهبت أن أخالف بين طرفيها فلم تبلغ لي وكانت لها ذباذب فنكستها ثم خالفت بين طرفيها ثم تواقصت عليها ثم جئت حتى قمت عن يسار رسول الله ﷺ فأخذ بيدي فأدارني حتى أقامني عن يمينه ثم جاء جبار بن صخر فتوضأ ثم جاء فقام عن يسار رسول الله ﷺ فأخذ رسول الله ﷺ بيدينا جميعا فدفعنا حتى أقامنا خلفه فجعل رسول الله ﷺ يرمقني وأنا لا أشعر ثم فطنت به فقال هكذا بيده يعني شد وسطك فلما فرغ رسول الله ﷺ قال يا جابر قلت لبيك يا رسول الله قال إذا كان واسعا فخالف بين طرفيه وإذا كان ضيقا فاشدده على حقوك
