Ubada bin Walid reported,

Then we went on until we came to Jabir bin Abdullah in his masjid. He was praying in a single garment, wrapped up in it. I stepped through the people until I sat down between him and the qibla, and I said, "May Allah have mercy on you, do you pray in a single garment when your cloak is right there beside you?"He pressed his hand against my chest like this, spreading his fingers apart and curving them, and said, "I wanted some fool like you to come in on me and see how I do it, so that he would do the same."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us in this masjid of ours with a dry palm branch of the Ibn Tab variety in his hand. He noticed some mucus on the qibla wall of the masjid, so he scraped it off with the branch. Then he turned to us and said, 'Which of you would like Allah to turn away from him?'"Jabir said, we were struck silent with awe.Then he said, "'Which of you would like Allah to turn away from him?'"Again we were struck silent with awe.Then he said, "'Which of you would like Allah to turn away from him?'"We said, "None of us, Messenger of Allah."He said, "When one of you stands to pray, Allah is before his face. So let him not spit in front of himself, nor to his right. Let him spit to his left, under his left foot. And if it comes on him suddenly, let him do this with his garment." Then he folded his garment over on itself.Then he said, "Show me some perfume." A young man of the neighborhood got up and ran off to his family, and came back with fragrant paste in the palm of his hand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it, put it on the tip of the palm branch, and smeared it over the spot where the mucus had been.Jabir said, "And that is where your practice of putting perfume in your masjids comes from."

ثم مضينا حتى أتينا جابر بن عبد الله في مسجده وهو يصلي في ثوب واحد مشتملا به فتخطيت القوم حتى جلست بينه وبين القبلة فقلت يرحمك الله أتصلي في ثوب واحد ورداؤك إلى جنبك قال فقال بيده في صدري هكذا وفرق بين أصابعه وقوسها أردت أن يدخل علي الأحمق مثلك فيراني كيف أصنع فيصنع مثله أتانا رسول الله ﷺ في مسجدنا هذا وفي يده عرجون ابن طاب فرأى في قبلة المسجد نخامة فحكها بالعرجون ثم أقبل علينا فقال أيكم يحب أن يعرض الله عنه قال فخشعنا ثم قال أيكم يحب أن يعرض الله عنه قال فخشعنا ثم قال أيكم يحب أن يعرض الله عنه قلنا لا أينا يا رسول الله قال فإن أحدكم إذا قام يصلي فإن الله تبارك وتعالى قبل وجهه فلا يبصقن قبل وجهه ولا عن يمينه وليبصق عن يساره تحت رجله اليسرى فإن عجلت به بادرة فليقل بثوبه هكذا ثم طوى ثوبه بعضه على بعض فقال أروني عبيرا فقام فتى من الحي يشتد إلى أهله فجاء بخلوق في راحته فأخذه رسول الله ﷺ فجعله على رأس العرجون ثم لطخ به على أثر النخامة فقال جابر فمن هناك جعلتم الخلوق في مساجدكم
