We were with Umar when he asked, "Which of you remembers what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about tribulation, exactly as he said it?"I said, "I do."Umar said, "You are certainly bold. How did he put it?"I replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'A man's trial lies in his family, his wealth, his own self, his children, and his neighbor, and fasting, prayer, charity, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong wipe it away.'"Umar said, "That is not what I meant. I mean the one that surges like the surging of the sea."I said, "What have you to do with that, Commander of the Faithful? Between you and it there stands a locked door."He asked, "Will the door be broken open or simply opened?"I said, "No, it will be broken."Umar said, "Then it is more likely never to be shut again."We asked Hudhayfa, "Did Umar know who the door was?"He said, "Yes, as surely as he knew that night comes before tomorrow. I related to him a report that contained no falsehoods."We were too awed to ask Hudhayfa who the door was, so we said to Masruq, "You ask him." He asked him, and Hudhayfa said, "Umar."This is the wording of the hadith of Abu Muawiya. In the hadith of Isa, from Amash, from Shaqiq, he said, "I heard Hudhayfa say..."
