We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey during which the people suffered hardship. Abdullah bin Ubayy said to his companions, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, so that they may disperse from around him."Zuhayr noted that this is the reading of those who recite "حوله" with a kasrah. He also said, "If we return to Medina, the mightier will surely expel the weaker from it."Zayd said, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of this. He sent for Abdullah bin Ubayy and questioned him, but he swore emphatically that he had not done so. So they said, 'Zayd has lied to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'"Zayd continued, "What they said weighed heavily on me, until Allah revealed verses confirming my truthfulness, 'When the hypocrites come to you' [Munafiqun 63:1]."He said, "Then the Prophet ﷺ called them so that he might seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away."And His saying, "As if they were propped-up timbers" [Munafiqun 63:4]. He said, "They were men of the most handsome appearance."
