Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi reported,

I heard Ali رضي الله عنه saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, Zubayr, and Miqdad, and he said, 'Go to the meadow of Khakh, for there you will find a woman traveler carrying a letter. Take it from her.'So we set out, our horses racing with us, until we came upon the woman. We said, 'Hand over the letter.'She replied, 'I have no letter with me.'We said, 'You will produce the letter, or you will take off your clothes.'So she pulled it out from her braided hair. We brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it turned out to contain a message from Hatib bin Abu Balta to certain polytheists in Mecca, informing them of some of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ plans. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Hatib, what is this?'He answered, 'Do not be hasty with me, Messenger of Allah. I was a man attached to the Quraysh but not one of them by blood.'"Sufyan said, "He was an ally of theirs but not from their lineage. The Muhajirun who were with you have relatives in Mecca who protect their families through those ties. Since I lacked such kinship among them, I wanted to do them a favor so they might protect my relatives. I did not do it out of disbelief, nor as apostasy from my religion, nor out of contentment with disbelief after Islam."The Prophet ﷺ said, "He has spoken the truth."Umar said, "Allow me, Messenger of Allah, to strike off the head of this hypocrite."He replied, "He fought at Badr. How do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said, 'Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you.'"So Allah عز وجل revealed, "You who believe, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies" [Mumtahanah 60:1].The hadith of Abu Bakr and Zuhayr does not include mention of the verse, and Ishaq placed it in his narration as part of Sufyan's recitation.
