Saeed bin Jubayr reported,

I said to Ibn Abbas that Nawf al-Bikali claimed that Musa, the companion of the Children of Israil, was not the same Musa who was the companion of Khidr عليه السلام.Ibn Abbas replied, "The enemy of Allah has lied. I heard Ubayy bin Kaab say that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Musa عليه السلام stood up to deliver a sermon to the Children of Israil, and he was asked, "Who is the most knowledgeable of people?" He answered, "I am the most knowledgeable." Allah reproached him for not attributing the knowledge to Him, so Allah revealed to him that there was a servant of His at the junction of the two seas who was more knowledgeable than him.Musa asked, "My Lord, how can I reach him?"He was told, "Carry a fish in a basket. Wherever you lose the fish, that is where he is."So he set out, accompanied by his attendant Yusha bin Nun. Musa عليه السلام carried a fish in a basket, and the two of them walked on until they reached the rock, where Musa عليه السلام and his attendant lay down to rest. The fish stirred in the basket, slipped out, and fell into the sea. Allah held back the flow of water from it so that it became like an arch, forming a tunnel for the fish, which was a wonder for Musa and his attendant. They traveled on for the rest of that day and night, and Musa's companion forgot to inform him. When morning came, Musa عليه السلام said to his attendant, "Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered fatigue from this journey of ours" [Kahf 18:62]. He had not felt fatigue until he had passed the place he was commanded to reach. His attendant said, "Did you see when we took refuge at the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish. None made me forget to mention it except Satan. And it took its course into the sea, amazingly" [Kahf 18:63].Musa said, "That is what we were seeking." So they returned, retracing their footsteps" [Kahf 18:64]. They retraced their steps until they came back to the rock, where Musa saw a man covered with a garment. Musa greeted him with peace.Khidr said, "How is there peace in your land?"Musa replied, "I am Musa."Khidr asked, "The Musa of the Children of Israil?"He answered, "Yes."Khidr said, "You possess knowledge from Allah's knowledge that Allah has taught you which I do not know, and I possess knowledge from Allah's knowledge that He has taught me which you do not know."Musa عليه السلام said to him, "May I follow you on the condition that you teach me from what you have been taught of right guidance?" He said, "Indeed, you will never be able to bear with me patiently. And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?" He said, "You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in any order" [Kahf 18:66–69].Khidr said to him, "Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention" [Kahf 18:70].Musa replied, "Agreed."So Khidr and Musa set off, walking along the seashore. A ship passed by them, and they spoke to its crew, asking to be taken aboard. They recognized Khidr and carried them without charging a fare. Then Khidr went to one of the ship's planks and pulled it out.Musa said to him, "These people carried us without a fare, yet you have deliberately damaged their ship to drown its people. You have certainly done a grave thing." He said, "Did I not tell you that you would never be able to have patience with me?" He said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot, and do not overburden me with difficulty in my matter" [Kahf 18:71–73].Then they left the ship. As they were walking along the shore, they saw a boy playing with other boys. Khidr seized his head and tore it off with his hand, killing him.Musa exclaimed, "Have you killed a pure soul who had killed no one? You have certainly done a deplorable thing." He said, "Did I not tell you that you would never be able to have patience with me?" [Kahf 18:74–75].This was more severe than the first. "He said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse." So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so he restored it" [Kahf 18:76–77]. The wall was leaning. Khidr gestured with his hand like this and straightened it.Musa said to him, "These are people we came to who would not show us hospitality nor feed us. If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment." He said, "This is the parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience" [Kahf 18:77–78].'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Musa. I wish he had been patient so that more of their story could have been told to us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said, "The first incident from Musa was due to forgetfulness."He said, "A sparrow came and landed on the edge of the ship, then dipped its beak into the sea. Khidr said to him, 'My knowledge and your knowledge, compared to Allah's knowledge, are no more than what this sparrow has taken from the sea.'"Saeed bin Jubayr said, "He used to recite the verse as, 'And there was before them a king who seized every sound ship by force,' and he used to recite, 'As for the boy, he was a disbeliever.'"
