Abu Musa Ashari reported,

Abu Musa came to Umar bin Khattab and said, "Peace be upon you. This is Abdullah bin Qays." He was not granted permission to enter. So he said, "Peace be upon you. This is Abu Musa. Peace be upon you. This is Ashari." Then he turned away.Umar said, "Bring him back to me, bring him back to me!"So he came, and Umar said, "Abu Musa, what made you turn back? We were occupied with something."Abu Musa replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Asking permission is three times. If you are given permission, enter, and if not, then go back.'"Umar said, "You had better bring me proof of this, or else I will do such and such to you."Abu Musa went off, and Umar said, "If he finds proof, you will find him by the pulpit this evening, and if he finds no proof, you will not find him there."When evening came, they found him there. Umar said, "Abu Musa, what do you say? Have you found proof?"He said, "Yes. Ubayy bin Kaab."Umar said, "He is trustworthy." Then he said, "Abu Tufayl, what is this man saying?"He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say it, son of Khattab. So do not be a torment upon the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Umar said, "Glory be to Allah. I only heard something and wished to verify it."In another version, Umar said, "Abu Mundhir, did you yourself hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He said, "Yes. So do not be, son of Khattab, a torment upon the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." And this version does not mention Umar saying, "Glory be to Allah," nor what came after it.
