Abu Hurairah reported,

He saw a man dragging his lower garment, so he began striking the ground with his foot, while he himself was governor over Bahrain, calling out, "The governor has come, the governor has come!" Then he said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah does not look at anyone who drags his garment out of vanity."In Ibn Jafar's version of the hadith, Marwan used to appoint Abu Hurairah as his deputy. In Ibn Muthanna's version, Abu Hurairah used to be appointed as deputy over Madinah.
