Uthman performed ablution at al-Maqaid and said, "Shall I show you the ablution of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" Then he performed ablution, washing each part three times.Qutayba added in his narration that Sufyan said, Abu Nadr reported from Abu Anas, "And with him were some men from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
Muslim cited the hadith of Waki from Thawri from Abu Nadr from Abu Anas from Uthman, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, performed wudu three times each, and we have already written about this elsewhere. He also cited it from Abu Bakr, Qutayba, and Abu Khaythama, from Waki, from Sufyan, from Abu Nadr, from Abu Anas, from Uthman, the hadith of wudu. This is one of the things in which Waki bin Jarra made a notable mistake regarding Thawri. The reliable companions of Thawri disagreed with him on this, among them Ubaydullah Ashjai, Abdullah bin Walid, Yazid bin Abu Hakeem al-Adaniyy, Firyabi, Muawiya bin Hisham, Abu Huzaifa, and others, who narrated it from Thawri, from Abu Nadr, from Busr bin Saeed, from Uthman, and this is the correct version. Muslim did not include the hadith of Busr bin Saeed, which is agreed upon, but instead included the hadith of Abu Anas, which is a mistake on Waki's part. Allah knows best.Mahmud bin Ghaylan narrated it from Waki and from Abu Ahmad, from Thawri, from Abu Nadr, from Abu Anas, conflating one with the other, while others narrated it from Abu Ahmad correctly. Layth narrated it from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Abu Nadr, from Uthman, as a mursal hadith, without mentioning anyone between them.As for the hadith of Waki, his saying "from Abu Nadr, from Ibn Anas, from Uthman" is a mistake on his part, in which he became confused, because he used to narrate from memory. What is actually found with Thawri, from Abu Nadr, from Ibn Anas, from Uthman, are two mawquf hadiths, other than the hadith of wudu. One of them is that he would not say the takbir until the rows were straightened, and he would send men to straighten the rows. The other is that the one who listens silently to the one leading the silent prayer has the same reward as the one who listens attentively.
Hafiz Daraqutni said in al-Ilal, when asked about this hadith (vol. 1, p. 74), "Abu Nadr Salim narrated it, but there is disagreement about who he narrated it from. Thawri narrated it from him, though there is also disagreement about who narrated it from Thawri. Abu Naeem, Abu Huzaifa, the two Adanis Abdullah bin Walid and Yazid bin Abu Hakeem, Ubaydullah Ashjai, and others narrated it from Thawri, from Abu Nadr, from Busr bin Saeed, from Uthman.Waki and Abu Ahmad Zubayri disagreed with them, narrating it from Thawri, from Abu Nadr, from Abu Anas, that is, Malik bin Abu Amir, the grandfather of Malik bin Anas, from Uthman.Yazid bin Abu Habib narrated it from Abu Nadr as a mursal report, from Uthman, but he did not bring any proof. The correct view is that of those who said it was from Busr bin Saeed. And Allah knows best." End of quote.
I say, Abu Zura and Abu Hatim, may Allah have mercy on them both, did not cover all its paths of transmission as thoroughly as Daraqutni, may Allah have mercy on him, did. That is why they ruled in favor of Waki over Firyabi. But Firyabi was followed by the memorizing scholars in his narration, as Daraqutni and Abu Ali Ghassani mentioned, and Nawawi affirmed them both on that.
