Umar saw Atarid Tamimi displaying a silk garment for sale in the market. Atarid was a man who used to visit kings and obtain gifts from them. Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, I saw Atarid displaying a silk garment in the market. Perhaps you could buy it and wear it for the Arab delegations when they come to you," and I think he also said, "and wear it on Friday."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears silk in this world."Some time later, silk garments were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He sent one to Umar, one to Usama bin Zayd, and gave one to Ali bin Abu Talib, telling him, "Cut it up into headscarves to share among your women."Umar came carrying his garment and said, "Messenger of Allah, you have sent this to me, yet only yesterday you said what you said about Atarid's garment."The Prophet ﷺ answered, "I did not send it to you so you could wear it. I sent it to you so you could benefit from it."As for Usama, he went out wearing his garment. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him such a look that Usama realized he had disapproved of what he had done. He said, "Messenger of Allah, why do you look at me like that? You yourself sent it to me."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I did not send it to you so you could wear it. I sent it to you so you could cut it up into headscarves to share among your women."

رأى عمر عطاردا التميمي يقيم بالسوق حلة سيراء وكان رجلا يغشى الملوك ويصيب منهم فقال عمر يا رسول الله إني رأيت عطاردا يقيم في السوق حلة سيراء فلو اشتريتها فلبستها لوفود العرب إذا قدموا عليك وأظنه قال ولبستها يوم الجمعة فقال له رسول الله ﷺ إنما يلبس الحرير في الدنيا من لا خلاق له في الآخرة فلما كان بعد ذلك أتي رسول الله ﷺ بحلل سيراء فبعث إلى عمر بحلة وبعث إلى أسامة بن زيد بحلة وأعطى علي بن أبي طالب حلة وقال شققها خمرا بين نسائك قال فجاء عمر بحلته يحملها فقال يا رسول الله بعثت إلي بهذه وقد قلت بالأمس في حلة عطارد ما قلت فقال إني لم أبعث بها إليك لتلبسها ولكني بعثت بها إليك لتصيب بها وأما أسامة فراح في حلته فنظر إليه رسول الله ﷺ نظرا عرف أن رسول الله ﷺ قد أنكر ما صنع فقال يا رسول الله ما تنظر إلي فأنت بعثت إلي بها فقال إني لم أبعث إليك لتلبسها ولكني بعثت بها إليك لتشققها خمرا بين نسائك
