Jabir reported, "When the trench was being dug, I saw signs of severe hunger on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I turned back to my wife and asked her, 'Do you have anything? I have seen severe hunger on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' She brought out a leather bag containing a saa of barley, and we had a small lamb that we had been raising at home.I slaughtered the lamb while she ground the barley, and we finished at the same time. I cut the meat into pieces and put it in her cooking pot, then I set out for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. My wife said, 'Do not embarrass me before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and those with him.'I came to him and spoke to him privately, saying, 'Messenger of Allah, we have slaughtered a small lamb of ours and ground a saa of barley that we had. So come, you and a few men with you.'But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, 'People of the trench, Jabir has prepared a feast for you, so come along!'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not take down your pot, and do not bake your dough until I come.'So I went back, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came leading the people. I came to my wife, and she said, 'Shame on you, shame on you!' I said, 'I did exactly what you told me to do.'She brought out our dough to him, and he spat into it and blessed it. Then he turned to our pot and spat into it and blessed it. Then he said, 'Call a woman to bake bread with you, and ladle from your pot, but do not take it down.' They were a thousand men.I swear by Allah, they all ate until they left it and turned away, while our pot was still bubbling as it had been, and our dough," or as Dahhak said, "was still being baked as it was."
حدثني حجاج بن الشاعر حدثني الضحاك بن مخلد من رقعة عارض لي بها ثم قرأه علي قال أخبرناه حنظلة بن أبي سفيان حدثنا سعيد بن ميناء قال سمعت
ا لما حفر الخندق رأيت برسول الله ﷺ خمصا فانكفأت إلى امرأتي فقلت لها هل عندك شيء فإني رأيت برسول الله ﷺ خمصا شديدا فأخرجت لي جرابا فيه صاع من شعير ولنا بهيمة داجن قال فذبحتها وطحنت ففرغت إلى فراغي فقطعتها في برمتها ثم وليت إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقالت لا تفضحني برسول الله ﷺ ومن معه قال فجئته فساررته فقلت يا رسول الله إنا قد ذبحنا بهيمة لنا وطحنت صاعا من شعير كان عندنا فتعال أنت في نفر معك فصاح رسول الله ﷺ وقال يا أهل الخندق إن جابرا قد صنع لكم سورا فحي هلا بكم وقال رسول الله ﷺ لا تنزلن برمتكم ولا تخبزن عجينتكم حتى أجيء فجئت وجاء رسول الله ﷺ يقدم الناس حتى جئت امرأتي فقالت بك وبك فقلت قد فعلت الذي قلت لي فأخرجت له عجينتنا فبصق فيها وبارك ثم عمد إلى برمتنا فبصق فيها وبارك ثم قال ادعي خابزة فلتخبز معك واقدحي من برمتكم ولا تنزلوها وهم ألف فأقسم بالله لأكلوا حتى تركوه وانحرفوا وإن برمتنا لتغط كما هي وإن عجينتنا أو كما قال الضحاك لتخبز كما هو
