A bridegroom in Medina invited us, and he served us thirteen lizards. Some of us ate while others abstained. The next day I met Ibn Abbas and told him about it. People gathered around him in great numbers, until one of them said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I do not eat it, nor do I forbid it, nor do I declare it unlawful.'"Ibn Abbas said, "What an evil thing you have said. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ was sent only to declare things lawful or unlawful. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was once at Maymun's house, and with him were Fadl bin Abbas, Khalid bin Walid, and another woman, when a tray bearing meat was brought close to them. When the Prophet ﷺ was about to eat, Maymun said to him, 'It is the meat of a lizard.' He withdrew his hand and said, 'This is meat I have never eaten.' Then he said to them, 'Eat.' So Fadl, Khalid bin Walid, and the woman ate from it. Maymun said, 'I will not eat anything that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ does not eat.'"
