Abdullah bin Umar reported,

I was present when my father was struck down. The people praised him, saying, "May Allah reward you with good."He replied, "I am both hopeful and fearful."They said, "Appoint a successor."He said, "Should I bear the burden of your affairs in life and in death? I would wish that my share of it be neither for me nor against me. If I appoint a successor, then one better than me has done so before me," meaning Abu Bakr, "and if I leave you without one, then one better than me left you so, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Abdullah said, "When he mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I knew that he would not appoint a successor."

عن ابن عمر قال

حضرت أبي حين أصيب فأثنوا عليه وقالوا جزاك الله خيرا فقال راغب وراهب قالوا استخلف فقال أتحمل أمركم حيا وميتا لوددت أن حظي منها الكفاف لا علي ولا لي فإن أستخلف فقد استخلف من هو خير مني يعني أبا بكر وإن أترككم فقد ترككم من هو خير مني رسول الله ﷺ قال عبد الله فعرفت أنه حين ذكر رسول الله ﷺ غير مستخلف
