Salama bin Akwa reported, We arrived at Hudaybiya with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we were fourteen hundred men. There was a well there with fifty sheep, but the water was not enough to satisfy them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat on the edge of the well and either prayed or spat into it. The water then gushed forth, so we drank and drew water freely. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called us to give him the pledge of allegiance under the tree. I was the first of the people to pledge to him. Then others pledged, and others, until when he was in the middle of the people, he said, "Pledge, Salama."I said, "I have already pledged to you, Messenger of Allah, at the start."He said, "Pledge again."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that I was unarmed, so he gave me a shield or a small leather buckler. Then the people continued to pledge until he was at the end of the people, when he said, "Will you not pledge to me, Salama?"I said, "I have already pledged to you, Messenger of Allah, at the beginning and in the middle of the people."He said, "And again."So I pledged to him a third time. Then he said to me, "Salama, where is the shield or buckler I gave you?"I said, "Messenger of Allah, my uncle Amir met me unarmed, so I gave it to him."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said, "You are like the man of old who said, 'O Allah, grant me a beloved companion who is dearer to me than myself.'"Then the polytheists sent word to us seeking peace, until we walked among each other and made a treaty. I was a servant of Talha bin Ubaydullah. I would water his horse, groom it, and serve him, and I ate from his food. I had left my family and property as a migrant to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.When we and the people of Mecca had made the treaty and mingled with each other, I came to a tree, swept away its thorns, and lay down beneath it. Four men from the polytheists of Mecca came to me and began speaking ill of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I hated them and moved to another tree. They hung up their weapons and lay down. While they were like that, a caller cried out from the bottom of the valley, "Help, O Muhajirun! Ibn Zunaym has been killed!"I drew my sword and rushed at those four while they were sleeping. I seized their weapons and gathered them in a bundle in my hand, and I said, "By Him who has honored the face of Muhammad, none of you will raise his head without my striking the part where his eyes are."Then I came driving them along to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. My uncle Amir came leading a man from the Ablat tribe named Mikraz on a barded horse along with seventy of the polytheists, to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at them and said, "Let them go, so that the beginning of treachery and its repetition will be on them." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pardoned them, and Allah revealed, "And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them within Mecca after He caused you to overcome them" [Fath 48:24], the entire verse. Then we set out returning to Medina, and we camped at a place where between us and the Banu Lihyan, who were polytheists, there stood a mountain. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought forgiveness for whoever would climb that mountain that night, as if to act as a scout for the Prophet ﷺ and his companions. Salama said, I climbed that mountain that night two or three times. Then we arrived at Medina, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent his riding-camels out with Rabah, his servant, and I went with him, taking out Talha's horse to graze along with the camels. When morning came, Abdul-Rahman al-Fazari had raided the camels of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, driven them all off, and killed their herder.I said, "Rabah, take this horse and bring it to Talha bin Ubaydullah, and tell the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that the polytheists have raided his pasturing camels."Then I stood on a hillock, faced Medina, and called out three times, "A morning attack!" Then I set out after the raiders, shooting arrows at them and chanting,I am the son of Akwa, And today is the day the lowly perish.I would catch up with one of them and lodge an arrow in his saddle until the arrowhead reached his shoulder, and I would say, "Take that, and I am the son of Akwa, and today is the day the lowly perish." By Allah, I kept shooting at them and disabling their mounts. Whenever a horseman turned back toward me, I would come to a tree, sit at its base, then shoot him and disable his mount. When the path through the mountain narrowed and they entered the narrow pass, I climbed up the mountain and began pelting them with stones.I kept following them in this way, until not a single camel of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ camels remained that I had not left behind me, having recovered it. They left me alone with the camels, and I kept pursuing them, shooting at them, until they had thrown down more than thirty cloaks and thirty spears to lighten themselves. They threw nothing down without my placing a marker of stones on it so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions would know it.They came to a narrow part of a mountain pass, where so-and-so bin Badr al-Fazari had come to them. They sat to take their morning meal, and I sat at the top of a peak.Al-Fazari said, "What is this I see?"They said, "We have suffered from this nuisance. By Allah, he has not left us since the predawn darkness, shooting at us until he has snatched away everything in our hands."He said, "Let four men from you go up to him."So four of them climbed up the mountain toward me. When they were close enough to hear my speech, I said, "Do you know me?"They said, "No. Who are you?"I said, "I am Salama bin Akwa. By Him who has honored the face of Muhammad ﷺ, I do not pursue any man among you without overtaking him, and no man among you can pursue me and overtake me."One of them said, "I think that is so."So they returned. I did not move from my place until I saw the horsemen of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ coming through the trees. The first of them was Akhram al-Asadi, behind him Abu Qatada al-Ansari, and behind him Miqdad bin Aswad al-Kindi. I took hold of Akhram's bridle. The enemy turned and fled.I said, "Akhram, beware of them, lest they cut you off before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions catch up."He said, "Salama, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day, and you know that Paradise is true and the Fire is true, then do not stand between me and martyrdom."So I let him go, and he met Abdul-Rahman in combat. Abdul-Rahman wounded Akhram's horse, and Akhram speared Abdul-Rahman and killed him, then mounted Abdul-Rahman's horse. Then Abu Qatada, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, caught up with the man who had killed Akhram and speared him, killing him.By Him who has honored the face of Muhammad ﷺ, I followed them running on my feet, until I could no longer see anything behind me of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ or even their dust, until just before sunset they turned aside to a ravine that had water in it called Dhu Qarad to drink, for they were thirsty. They saw me running behind them, so I drove them off from it and they did not taste a drop of it.They came out and ran swiftly up a pass. I ran and caught up with one of them and struck him with an arrow at the base of his shoulder. I said, "Take that, and I am the son of Akwa, and today is the day the lowly perish."He said, "May his mother lose him! Are you the same Akwa we faced this morning?"I said, "Yes, enemy of yourself, the same Akwa of this morning."They abandoned two horses on the pass, and I brought them along driving them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Amir met me carrying a waterskin with diluted milk and a waterskin with water. I performed ablution and drank, then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was at the water from which I had driven them away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken those camels and everything I had recovered from the polytheists, and every spear and cloak. Bilal had slaughtered a camel from the herd I had recovered from the people, and was roasting some of its liver and hump for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.I said, "Messenger of Allah, let me pick a hundred men from the people and I will pursue this band, so that not a single one will remain to bring back news, but that I will have killed him."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his back teeth were visible in the firelight, then said, "Salama, do you really think you would do this?"I said, "Yes, by Him who has honored you."He said, "They are now being given hospitality in the land of Ghatafan."A man from Ghatafan came and said, "So-and-so slaughtered a camel for them, and when they were skinning it, they saw dust and said, 'The enemy has come upon you,' so they fled."When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best of our horsemen today was Abu Qatada, and the best of our footmen was Salama."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me two shares, the share of a horseman and the share of a foot-soldier, combining them both for me. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted me behind him on al-Adba, returning to Medina. While we were riding, there was a man from the Ansar who could not be outrun in a sprint. He kept saying, "Is there anyone to race to Medina? Is there anyone to race?" He kept repeating this. When I heard his words, I said, "Will you not honor a noble man, nor show respect to one of distinction?"He said, "No, unless it is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."I said, "Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, let me race the man."He said, "If you wish."I said, "Off with you!" I bent my legs, sprang up, and ran. I held back for one or two ascents to save my breath, then I ran after him. I held back for one or two more ascents, then I pushed forward until I caught up with him. I struck him between the shoulders and said, "I have outrun you, by Allah!"He said, "I think so." So I outraced him to Medina.By Allah, we did not stay more than three nights before we set out for Khaybar with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. My uncle Amir began chanting to the people,By Allah, had it not been for Allah we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. We have no escape from your favor. Make our feet firm if we meet the enemy, and send down tranquility upon us.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who is this?"He said, "I am Amir."He said, "May your Lord forgive you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never sought forgiveness specifically for any person without that person being granted martyrdom. Umar bin Khattab, who was on a camel of his, called out, "Prophet of Allah, why did you not let us enjoy Amir longer?"When we arrived at Khaybar, their king Marhab came out brandishing his sword and saying,Khaybar knows well that I am Marhab, fully armed, a tested champion, when wars come blazing forth. My uncle Amir came out to meet him saying,Khaybar knows well that I am Amir, fully armed, a daring champion. They exchanged two blows. Marhab's sword landed on Amir's shield, and Amir went to strike low at him, but his sword turned back upon himself and cut his own median vein, and that was the cause of his death.Salama said, I went out, and there were some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ saying, "Amir's deeds have been nullified, he killed himself." I came to the Prophet ﷺ weeping and said, "Messenger of Allah, Amir's deeds have been nullified."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who said that?"I said, "Some of your companions."He said, "Whoever said that has lied. Rather, he has his reward twice over."Then he sent me to Ali, who was suffering from sore eyes, and said, "I will surely give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, or whom Allah and His Messenger love." I came to Ali and led him along while he was suffering from sore eyes, until I brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He spat into his eyes and he was cured, and he gave him the banner.Marhab came out saying,Khaybar knows well that I am Marhab, fully armed, a tested champion, when wars come blazing forth.Ali said,I am the one whose mother named me Haydara, like a lion of the thickets, fierce of aspect, I give them full measure with the sa, the measure of Sandara.Ali struck Marhab's head and killed him, and the conquest came at his hands.Ibrahim said, Muhammad bin Yahya narrated to us, Abdul-Samad bin Abdul-Warith narrated to us from Ikrima bin Ammar this hadith in its full length. And Ahmad bin Yusuf al-Azdi al-Sulami narrated to us, Nadr bin Muhammad narrated to us from Ikrima bin Ammar this same hadith.
