We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Khaybar, and we traveled by night. A man from the group said to Amir bin al-Akwa, "Won't you let us hear some of your verses?" Amir was a poet, so he dismounted and began chanting to drive the camels along, saying:"O Allah, were it not for You, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. So forgive us, may we be ransom for You, for what we have fallen short in, and make our feet firm if we meet the enemy, and send down tranquility upon us. For when we are called, we come, and against us they cry out for help."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Who is this driver of the camels?"They replied, "It is Amir."He said, "May Allah have mercy on him."A man from the group said, "It is guaranteed, Messenger of Allah. If only you had let us benefit from him longer."We arrived at Khaybar and besieged them until severe hunger struck us. Then he said, "Allah has granted you victory over them."When evening came on the day they were conquered, the people lit many fires. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What are these fires? What are you cooking on them?"They said, "Meat."He asked, "What kind of meat?"They said, "The meat of domesticated donkeys."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Pour it out and break the pots."A man said, "Or should they pour it out and wash the pots?"He said, "Or that."When the two sides drew up in ranks, Amir's sword was short. He swung it at the leg of a Jew to strike him, but the edge of his sword rebounded and struck Amir's knee, and he died from it.When they returned, Salama said, while holding my hand, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me silent, he asked, "What is the matter with you?"I said to him, "May my father and mother be your ransom. They are saying that Amir's deeds have been rendered worthless."He asked, "Who said that?"I said, "So-and-so, and so-and-so, and Usayd bin Hudayr al-Ansari."He said, "Whoever said that has lied. He has two rewards," and he joined his two fingers together. "He was one who strove and struggled. Few Arabs have walked the earth like him."Qutayba differed from Muhammad in two words of the hadith, and in the narration of Ibn Abbad it is, "and send down tranquility upon us."
حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد ومحمد بن عباد واللفظ لابن عباد قالا حدثنا حاتم وهو ابن إسمعيل عن يزيد بن أبي عبيد مولى سلمة بن الأكوع
خرجنا مع رسول الله ﷺ إلى خيبر فتسيرنا ليلا فقال رجل من القوم لعامر بن الأكوع ألا تسمعنا من هنيهاتك وكان عامر رجلا شاعرا فنزل يحدو بالقوم يقول اللهم لولا أنت ما اهتدينا ولا تصدقنا ولا صلينا فاغفر فداء لك ما اقتفينا وثبت الأقدام إن لاقينا وألقين سكينة علينا إنا إذا صيح بنا أتينا وبالصياح عولوا علينا فقال رسول الله ﷺ من هذا السائق قالوا عامر قال يرحمه الله فقال رجل من القوم وجبت يا رسول الله لولا أمتعتنا به قال فأتينا خيبر فحاصرناهم حتى أصابتنا مخمصة شديدة ثم قال إن الله فتحها عليكم قال فلما أمسى الناس مساء اليوم الذي فتحت عليهم أوقدوا نيرانا كثيرة فقال رسول الله ﷺ ما هذه النيران على أي شيء توقدون فقالوا على لحم قال أي لحم قالوا لحم حمر الإنسية فقال رسول الله ﷺ أهريقوها واكسروها فقال رجل أو يهريقوها ويغسلوها فقال أو ذاك قال فلما تصاف القوم كان سيف عامر فيه قصر فتناول به ساق يهودي ليضربه ويرجع ذباب سيفه فأصاب ركبة عامر فمات منه قال فلما قفلوا قال سلمة وهو آخذ بيدي قال فلما رآني رسول الله ﷺ ساكتا قال ما لك قلت له فداك أبي وأمي زعموا أن عامرا حبط عمله قال من قاله قلت فلان وفلان وأسيد بن حضير الأنصاري فقال كذب من قاله إن له لأجرين وجمع بين إصبعيه إنه لجاهد مجاهد قل عربي مشى بها مثله وخالف قتيبة محمدا في الحديث في حرفين وفي رواية ابن عباد وألق سكينة علينا
