The Prophet ﷺ once rode a donkey fitted with a saddle covered by a Fadak blanket, and he had Usama riding behind him. He was on his way to visit Saad bin Ubada, who was ill, in the quarter of Banu Harith bin Khazraj. This was before the battle of Badr.He passed by a gathering that included a mixture of Muslims, idol-worshipping polytheists, and Jews. Among them was Abdullah bin Ubayy, and Abdullah bin Rawaha was also in the assembly. When the dust kicked up by the donkey reached the gathering, Abdullah bin Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak and said, "Do not stir up dust on us."The Prophet ﷺ greeted them, then stopped, dismounted, called them to Allah, and recited the Quran to them.Abdullah bin Ubayy said, "Sir, there is nothing better than what you say if it is true, but do not trouble us with it in our gatherings. Return to your own dwelling, and whoever comes to you from among us, recite it to him there."Abdullah bin Rawaha said, "Come to us in our gatherings, for we love that."The Muslims, the polytheists, and the Jews then traded insults until they were on the verge of coming to blows, but the Prophet ﷺ kept calming them down. He then mounted his donkey and went on until he entered upon Saad bin Ubada.He said, "Saad, did you not hear what Abu Hubab," meaning Abdullah bin Ubayy, "said? He said such and such."Saad replied, "Pardon him, Messenger of Allah, and overlook it. By Allah, Allah has given you what He has given you, but the people of this region had agreed to crown him and place the headband of leadership upon him. When Allah set that aside through the truth He gave you, he choked on it, and that is what made him behave the way you saw."So the Prophet ﷺ pardoned him.
حدثنا إسحق بن إبراهيم الحنظلي ومحمد بن رافع وعبد بن حميد واللفظ لابن رافع قال ابن رافع حدثنا و قال الآخران أخبرنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن الزهري عن عروة أن
أن النبي ﷺ ركب حمارا عليه إكاف تحته قطيفة فدكية وأردف وراءه أسامة وهو يعود سعد بن عبادة في بني الحارث بن الخزرج وذاك قبل وقعة بدر حتى مر بمجلس فيه أخلاط من المسلمين والمشركين عبدة الأوثان واليهود فيهم عبد الله بن أبي وفي المجلس عبد الله بن رواحة فلما غشيت المجلس عجاجة الدابة خمر عبد الله بن أبي أنفه بردائه ثم قال لا تغبروا علينا فسلم عليهم النبي ﷺ ثم وقف فنزل فدعاهم إلى الله وقرأ عليهم القرآن فقال عبد الله بن أبي أيها المرء لا أحسن من هذا إن كان ما تقول حقا فلا تؤذنا في مجالسنا وارجع إلى رحلك فمن جاءك منا فاقصص عليه فقال عبد الله بن رواحة اغشنا في مجالسنا فإنا نحب ذلك قال فاستب المسلمون والمشركون واليهود حتى هموا أن يتواثبوا فلم يزل النبي ﷺ يخفضهم ثم ركب دابته حتى دخل على سعد بن عبادة فقال أي سعد ألم تسمع إلى ما قال أبو حباب يريد عبد الله بن أبي قال كذا وكذا قال اعف عنه يا رسول الله واصفح فوالله لقد أعطاك الله الذي أعطاك ولقد اصطلح أهل هذه البحيرة أن يتوجوه فيعصبوه بالعصابة فلما رد الله ذلك بالحق الذي أعطاكه شرق بذلك فذلك فعل به ما رأيت فعفا عنه النبي ﷺ
