He said at Siffin, "People, hold your own judgment in suspicion. By Allah, I recall myself on the day of Abu Jandal, and had I been able to reject the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ decision, I would have rejected it. By Allah, we never laid our swords upon our shoulders for any affair without their bringing us smoothly to an outcome we could recognize, except this affair of yours."Ibn Numayr did not mention the words "for any affair," and in the version of the two of them it reads "to an outcome that appalls us."
