I went out with those who set out with Zayd bin Haritha on the expedition of Mutah, and a fighter from Yemen who had come as reinforcement accompanied me. He then related the hadith from the Prophet ﷺ in similar terms, except that he said in the hadith,Awf said, "I said, 'Khalid, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that the spoils belong to the one who kills the enemy?'"Khalid replied, "Yes, but I considered it too much for him."
