We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of Hunayn. When we engaged the enemy, the Muslims fell into disarray. I saw a man from the polytheists overpowering a Muslim, so I circled around until I came at him from behind and struck him on the tendon of his shoulder. He turned on me and seized me in such a grip that I sensed the smell of death from it. Then death overtook him and he released me.I caught up with Umar bin Khattab and he asked, "What is the matter with the people?"I said, "It is the decree of Allah."Then the people returned, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and said, "Whoever has killed an enemy and has proof of it, the spoils of the slain belong to him."So I stood up and said, "Who will testify for me?" Then I sat down.He said the same again, so I stood up and said, "Who will testify for me?" Then I sat down.He said it a third time, and I stood up.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What is the matter with you, Abu Qatada?"I told him the story.A man from the people said, "He speaks the truth, Messenger of Allah. The spoils of that slain man are with me, so satisfy him for his right."Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said, "No, by Allah! He would not turn to one of the lions of Allah who fights for Allah and His Messenger and then hand his spoils over to you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He has spoken the truth, so give them to him."So he gave them to me. I sold the coat of mail and used the price to buy a small palm grove among Banu Salama, and it was the first property I ever acquired in Islam.In the report of Layth, Abu Bakr said, "Never! He will not give it to a little hyena of Quraysh while leaving aside one of the lions of Allah."And in the report of Layth, "The first property I ever acquired."
و حدثنا أبو الطاهر وحرملة واللفظ له أخبرنا عبد الله بن وهب قال سمعت مالك بن أنس يقول حدثني يحيى بن سعيد عن عمر بن كثير بن أفلح عن أبي محمد مولى أبي قتادة
خرجنا مع رسول الله ﷺ عام حنين فلما التقينا كانت للمسلمين جولة قال فرأيت رجلا من المشركين قد علا رجلا من المسلمين فاستدرت إليه حتى أتيته من ورائه فضربته على حبل عاتقه وأقبل علي فضمني ضمة وجدت منها ريح الموت ثم أدركه الموت فأرسلني فلحقت عمر بن الخطاب فقال ما للناس فقلت أمر الله ثم إن الناس رجعوا وجلس رسول الله ﷺ فقال من قتل قتيلا له عليه بينة فله سلبه قال فقمت فقلت من يشهد لي ثم جلست ثم قال مثل ذلك فقال فقمت فقلت من يشهد لي ثم جلست ثم قال ذلك الثالثة فقمت فقال رسول الله ﷺ ما لك يا أبا قتادة فقصصت عليه القصة فقال رجل من القوم صدق يا رسول الله سلب ذلك القتيل عندي فأرضه من حقه وقال أبو بكر الصديق لا ها الله إذا لا يعمد إلى أسد من أسد الله يقاتل عن الله وعن رسوله فيعطيك سلبه فقال رسول الله ﷺ صدق فأعطه إياه فأعطاني قال فبعت الدرع فابتعت به مخرفا في بني سلمة فإنه لأول مال تأثلته في الإسلام وفي حديث الليث فقال أبو بكر كلا لا يعطيه أضيبع من قريش ويدع أسدا من أسد الله وفي حديث الليث لأول مال تأثلته
