I heard Suwayd bin Ghafla say, "Zayd bin Suhan, Salman bin Rabia, and I set out on a military expedition. I found a whip and picked it up.They both said to me, 'Leave it.'I said, 'No, but I will announce it. If its owner comes, fine. Otherwise, I will make use of it.'I refused to listen to them. When we returned from our expedition, it was decreed that I should perform Hajj, so I came to Medina and met Ubayy bin Kaab. I told him about the whip and what they had said.He replied, 'During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I found a pouch containing one hundred dinars. I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Announce it for a year." So I announced it, but I found no one who recognized it. Then I came back to him, and he said, "Announce it for a year." I announced it, but I found no one who recognized it. Then I came to him again, and he said, "Announce it for a year." I announced it, but found no one who recognized it. So he said, "Remember its number, its container, and its tie. If its owner comes, give it to him. Otherwise, make use of it." So I made use of it.'"I met him after that in Mecca, and he said, "I do not know whether it was three years or one year."

سمعت سويد بن غفلة قال خرجت أنا وزيد بن صوحان وسلمان بن ربيعة غازين فوجدت سوطا فأخذته فقالا لي دعه فقلت لا ولكني أعرفه فإن جاء صاحبه وإلا استمتعت به قال فأبيت عليهما فلما رجعنا من غزاتنا قضي لي أني حججت فأتيت المدينة فلقيت أبي بن كعب فأخبرته بشأن السوط وبقولهما فقال إني وجدت صرة فيها مائة دينار على عهد رسول الله ﷺ فأتيت بها رسول الله ﷺ فقال عرفها حولا قال فعرفتها فلم أجد من يعرفها ثم أتيته فقال عرفها حولا فعرفتها فلم أجد من يعرفها ثم أتيته فقال عرفها حولا فعرفتها فلم أجد من يعرفها فقال احفظ عددها ووعاءها ووكاءها فإن جاء صاحبها وإلا فاستمتع بها فاستمتعت بها فلقيته بعد ذلك بمكة فقال لا أدري بثلاثة أحوال أو حول واحد
