Abdullah bin Sahl bin Zayd and Muhaysa bin Masud bin Zayd, both from the Ansar of the tribe of Banu Haritha, set out for Khaybar during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. At that time Khaybar was under a peace treaty and its inhabitants were Jews. The two men separated to attend to their needs, and Abdullah bin Sahl was killed. He was found slain in a water channel. His companion buried him and then returned to Madinah. The brother of the slain man, Abdul-Rahman bin Sahl, along with Muhaysa and Huwaysa, went and reported to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what had happened to Abdullah and where he had been killed.Bashir, narrating from those he had met among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, reported that the Prophet ﷺ said to them, "Will you swear fifty oaths and thereby establish your right against the killer or the responsible party?"They replied, "Messenger of Allah, we did not witness it and were not present."He reportedly said, "Then will the Jews clear themselves of liability by swearing fifty oaths?"They said, "Messenger of Allah, how can we accept the oaths of a disbelieving people?"Bashir reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then paid the blood-money for him from his own resources.
