Ibn Umar used to lease out his farmlands during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, throughout the rule of Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman, and during the early part of Muawiya's caliphate. Then, toward the end of Muawiya's caliphate, word reached him that Rafi bin Khadij was reporting a prohibition concerning this practice from the Prophet ﷺ. So he went to him, and I was with him, and asked him about it.Rafi replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid the leasing of farmlands."After that, Ibn Umar gave up the practice. Whenever he was later asked about it, he would say, "Rafi bin Khadij claims that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade it."
