Some Companions of the Prophet ﷺ reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade it. Sulayman, that is Ibn Bilal, narrated to us from Yahya, who is Ibn Saeed, from Bashir bin Yasar, from some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who lived in their quarter, among them Sahl bin Abu Hathma, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade selling fruit still on the tree in exchange for dried dates, and said, "That is riba, that is bartering by guesswork." He made an exception only in the case of a single palm tree or two, allowing a household to take its fruit on the basis of an estimate of its yield in dried dates, so that they might eat the fruit fresh.
