Saeed bin Jubayr reported,

I was asked about the case of two spouses who invoke mutual cursing (Mutalaineen) during the governorship of Musab, whether they should be separated. I did not know what to say, so I went to Ibn Umar's house in Makkah.I said to the servant boy, "Ask permission for me to enter."He said, "He is taking his midday rest."But Ibn Umar heard my voice and said, "Is that Ibn Jubayr?"I said, "Yes."He said, "Come in. By Allah, nothing has brought you at this hour except some need."So I entered, and there he was, lying on a saddle blanket with his head resting on a pillow stuffed with palm fibers.I said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, the two who engage in mutual cursing, are they to be separated?"He said, "Glory be to Allah! Yes. The first person to ask about this was so-and-so, son of so-and-so. He said, 'Messenger of Allah, what do you think if one of us were to find his wife committing an indecency, what should he do? If he speaks, he speaks of a grave matter, and if he keeps silent, he keeps silent over the like of it.'The Prophet ﷺ remained silent and did not answer him. Some time later, the same man came back to him and said, 'The very thing I asked you about has now befallen me.' So Allah عز وجل revealed these verses in Surah an-Nur, 'And those who accuse their wives...' [Nur 24:6]. He recited them to him, admonished him, reminded him, and informed him that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. The man said, 'No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I have not lied about her.'Then he summoned the woman and admonished her, reminded her, and informed her that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. She said, 'No, by the One who sent you with the truth, he is indeed lying.'He began with the man, who bore witness four times by Allah that he was among the truthful, and the fifth time invoking the curse of Allah upon himself if he were among the liars. Then he turned to the woman, who bore witness four times by Allah that he was among the liars, and the fifth time invoking the wrath of Allah upon herself if he were among the truthful. Then he separated them."
