Abdullah bin Abdullah and Salim bin Abdullah spoke to Abdullah when Hajjaj marched out to fight Ibn Zubayr. They said, "It would do you no harm to skip the Hajj this year. We fear that fighting may break out among the people and you will be barred from reaching the House."He replied, "If I am barred from it, I will do just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did when I was with him and the disbelievers of Quraysh kept him from the House. I call you to witness that I have bound myself to perform Umrah."So he set out, and when he reached Dhul-Hulayfa he pronounced the call for Umrah. Then he said, "If my way is left open I will complete my Umrah, and if I am barred from it I will do just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did when I was with him." Then he recited, "You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example" [Ahzab 33:21].He traveled on, and when he was at the open plain of Bayda he said, "The two are one and the same matter. If I am barred from Umrah, I am barred from Hajj as well. I call you to witness that I have bound myself to perform a Hajj along with an Umrah."So he continued on until he purchased a sacrificial animal at Qudayd. Then he performed a single tawaf around the House for both of them, and a single circuit between Safa and Marwa, and he did not release himself from either of them until he released himself from both together with one Hajj on the Day of Sacrifice.
و حدثنا محمد بن المثنى حدثنا يحيى وهو القطان عن عبيد الله
أن عبد الله بن عبد الله وسالم بن عبد الله كلما عبد الله حين نزل الحجاج لقتال ابن الزبير قالا لا يضرك أن لا تحج العام فإنا نخشى أن يكون بين الناس قتال يحال بينك وبين البيت قال فإن حيل بيني وبينه فعلت كما فعل رسول الله ﷺ وأنا معه حين حالت كفار قريش بينه وبين البيت أشهدكم أني قد أوجبت عمرة فانطلق حتى أتى ذا الحليفة فلبى بالعمرة ثم قال إن خلي سبيلي قضيت عمرتي وإن حيل بيني وبينه فعلت كما فعل رسول الله ﷺ وأنا معه ثم تلا {لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة} ثم سار حتى إذا كان بظهر البيداء قال ما أمرهما إلا واحد إن حيل بيني وبين العمرة حيل بيني وبين الحج أشهدكم أني قد أوجبت حجة مع عمرة فانطلق حتى ابتاع بقديد هديا ثم طاف لهما طوافا واحدا بالبيت وبين الصفا والمروة ثم لم يحل منهما حتى حل منهما بحجة يوم النحر
