We came to visit Jabir bin Abdullah, and he asked about each of us in turn until he reached me. I said, "I am Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn." He extended his hand toward my head and undid my upper button, then my lower button, and placed his palm between my chest. I was a young lad at that time. He said, "Welcome, my nephew. Ask whatever you wish."So I questioned him. He was blind by then. The time for prayer arrived, so he stood up wrapped in a woven garment. Whenever he placed it on his shoulder, its two ends would slip back because it was too small, while his proper cloak lay beside him on a clothes rack. He led us in prayer. Then I said, "Tell me about the pilgrimage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He gestured with his hand and held up nine fingers, then said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained for nine years without performing Hajj. Then in the tenth year it was announced to the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would perform Hajj. A great many people came to Medina, all of them seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and to do as he did.We set out with him until we reached Dhul-Hulayfa, where Asma bint Umays gave birth to Muhammad bin Abu Bakr. She sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking, 'What should I do?'He replied, 'Bathe, fasten a cloth tightly around yourself, and enter the state of ihram.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then prayed in the mosque and mounted Qaswa, his she-camel. When she rose with him onto the open plain of Bayda, I looked ahead as far as my eye could see and there were riders and walkers, the same to his right, the same to his left, and the same behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in our midst, and the Quran was being revealed to him. He knew its interpretation, and whatever he did, we did the same.He proclaimed the talbiyah of pure monotheism, 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la sharika laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-nimata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.' The people called out the same talbiyah that they were used to calling, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not reject any of it. He kept reciting his own talbiyah."Jabir said, "We did not intend anything except Hajj. We were unaware of umrah at that point. When we reached the House with him, he touched the Black Stone, then walked briskly for three circuits and walked normally for four. Then he went forward to the station of Ibrahim
and recited, 'And take from the station of Ibrahim a place of prayer' [Baqarah 2:125]. He positioned the station between himself and the Kaaba. My father used to say, and I do not know him to have mentioned it from anyone except the Prophet ﷺ, that he would recite in those two units of prayer, 'Say, He is Allah, One,' and 'Say, O you who disbelieve.'Then he returned to the Black Stone and touched it, then went out through the gate to Safa. When he drew near Safa, he recited, 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah' [Baqarah 2:158], saying, 'I begin with what Allah began with.' So he began with Safa, climbing it until he could see the House. Facing the qibla, he declared the oneness of Allah and magnified Him, saying, 'There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone. He has fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and defeated the confederates by Himself alone.' Then he made supplication between these declarations. He said this three times. Then he descended toward Marwa. When his feet touched the bottom of the valley, he ran, and when they began the ascent, he walked, until he came to Marwa. On Marwa he did as he had done on Safa. When he reached the end of his sai at Marwa, he said, 'Had I known beforehand what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals, and I would have made it an umrah. So whoever among you has not brought a sacrificial animal should release himself from ihram and make this an umrah.'Suraqa bin Malik bin Jusham stood up and asked, 'Messenger of Allah, is this for this year of ours only, or forever?'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ interlocked his fingers and said, 'Umrah has entered into Hajj,' twice. 'No, rather forever and ever.'Ali came from Yemen with the Prophet's ﷺ sacrificial animals and found Fatimah
among those who had released themselves from ihram. She had put on dyed clothing and applied kohl. He disapproved of this from her, but she said, 'My father instructed me to do this.'"Jabir said, "Ali used to say in Iraq, 'I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complaining about Fatimah for what she had done, asking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what she had reported from him. I told him that I had disapproved of her actions.'He replied, 'She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth. What did you say when you took on the Hajj?'I said, 'I said, O Allah, I enter ihram with the same intention as Your Messenger.'He said, 'I have brought the sacrificial animals, so do not release yourself from ihram.'"Jabir said, "The total number of sacrificial animals brought by Ali from Yemen and those brought by the Prophet ﷺ was one hundred. All the people released themselves from ihram and shortened their hair, except the Prophet ﷺ and those who had brought sacrificial animals. When the day of Tarwiyah arrived, they set out for Mina and entered ihram for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted his ride and prayed Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr there. Then he waited a little until the sun rose and ordered that a tent of hair be pitched for him at Namira. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out, and Quraysh did not doubt that he would stop at al-Mashar al-Haram, as Quraysh used to do during the days of ignorance. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued past it until he reached Arafa, where he found that the tent had been pitched for him at Namira. He stopped there. When the sun began to decline, he ordered that Qaswa be prepared for him, and she was saddled. He came to the bottom of the valley and addressed the people, saying, 'Your blood and your wealth are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Behold, every matter of the days of ignorance is under my feet, abolished. The blood-feuds of the days of ignorance are abolished, and the first blood-claim of ours that I abolish is the blood of Ibn Rabia bin Harith, who was being nursed among Banu Saad and was killed by Huzayl. The usury of the days of ignorance is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is our usury, that of Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib. It is all abolished.Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them as a trust from Allah and made their private parts lawful for you by the word of Allah. You have the right that they not allow anyone you dislike onto your beds. If they do so, then strike them with a strike that is not severe. They have the right to their food and clothing from you in a fair manner.I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray, the Book of Allah. You will be asked about me, so what will you say?'They said, 'We bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled your duty, and given sincere counsel.'He raised his index finger to the sky and pointed it down toward the people, saying, 'O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness,' three times. Then the call to prayer was made, and the iqamah, and he prayed Zuhr. Then the iqamah was made again, and he prayed Asr. He did not pray anything between them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted his ride and came to the standing place. He turned the belly of his she-camel Qaswa toward the rocks and placed the path of the walkers in front of him, facing the qibla. He continued standing until the sun set and the yellow light faded slightly, until the disk had completely disappeared. He had Usama mount behind him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded, having tightened Qaswa's reins so that her head touched the saddle's pommel. He gestured with his right hand, saying, 'O people, calmness, calmness.' Whenever he came to a sand hill, he loosened her reins a little so she could ascend. He came to Muzdalifa and prayed Maghrib and Isha there with one adhan and two iqamahs, with no voluntary prayer between them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down until dawn appeared, and he prayed Fajr when the morning light became clear, with one adhan and one iqamah. Then he mounted Qaswa and came to al-Mashar al-Haram. He faced the qibla and supplicated to Him, magnified Him, declared His greatness, and affirmed His oneness. He continued standing until it became very bright, then he proceeded before sunrise. He took Fadl bin Abbas behind him on his mount. Fadl was a man with beautiful hair, white-skinned, and handsome. As the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was proceeding, some women passed by him on howdahs being driven along, and Fadl began looking at them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on Fadl's face. Fadl turned his face to the other side to look, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved his hand to the other side onto Fadl's face, turning his face away from the other direction so he would not look. When he reached the valley of Muhassir, he urged his ride a little. Then he took the middle path that leads out to the great Jamra, until he came to the Jamra at the tree. He threw seven pebbles at it, declaring takbir with each pebble, pebbles the size of bean-shooting stones. He threw from the bottom of the valley. Then he went to the place of sacrifice and slaughtered sixty-three camels with his own hand. Then he gave the rest to Ali, who slaughtered the remainder, and he made Ali a partner in his sacrifice. Then he ordered that a piece from each camel be taken and placed in a pot, which was cooked. They both ate from its meat and drank from its broth. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode and went down to the House and prayed Zuhr in Mecca. He came to Banu Abdul-Muttalib, who were drawing water at Zamzam, and said, 'Draw water, Banu Abdul-Muttalib. Were it not that people would overwhelm you in this duty of providing water, I would have drawn with you.' They handed him a bucket and he drank from it."
