I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasting during the ten days at all.
Muslim narrated the hadith of Amash, from Ibrahim, from Aswad, from Ayesha, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, never fasted the ten days." Abu Hasan said, "Mansur differed with him, narrating it from Ibrahim as a mursal report, and others besides them narrated it from him without mentioning in it, 'in his right hand.'"Layth and Ibn Wahb have more precise memory than Sulayman and than Talha bin Yahya. Nevertheless, the one who narrates it from Sulayman is Ismail, and he is daif. Nasai narrated it as he did, relating it from him, so his narration cannot be relied upon when he narrates it alone, whether from Sulayman or from anyone else.As for Talha bin Yahya, he is a minor narrator, while Layth and Ibn Wahb are both trustworthy, precise narrators and compilers of books. So the addition of Ibn Abu Uways from Sulayman is not to be accepted when he narrates it alone. Talha bin Yahya corroborated him, narrating from Layth, and Uthman bin Umar and others did as well. If Muslim permitted this, then he curtailed a hadith with this same chain of transmission, one narrated by two trustworthy and precise memorizers from Amr bin Harith, from Zuhri, from Anas, where one of them added upon the other a good, unobjectionable addition. So he included the curtailed hadith rather than the complete one. The two men, Musa bin Ayun and Abdullah bin Wahb, both narrated it from Amr, from Zuhri, from Anas, from the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, "When dinner is served." Ibn Ayun added, "and one of you is fasting, then begin with it before you pray." He included the hadith of Ibn Wahb but did not include the hadith of Musa, unless it be that the hadith of Musa bin Ayun containing this addition never reached him, in which case that would be an excuse for him in leaving it out.As for the hadith of the ring, a group narrated it from Zuhri, among them Zayd bin Saad, Aqeel, Abdul-Rahman bin Khalid bin Musafir, Ibrahim bin Saad, the nephew of Zuhri, Shuayb, Musa bin Uqba, Ibn Abu Atiq, and others, and none of them said anything about "its stone."
