In his lectures, he used to say that whoever was overtaken by dawn in a state of major ritual impurity should not fast. I mentioned this to Abdul-Rahman bin Harith, regarding his father, and he rejected it. So Abdul-Rahman set out, and I went with him, until we entered upon Ayesha and Umm Salama. Abdul-Rahman asked them about this.Both of them said, "The Prophet ﷺ would enter the morning in a state of major ritual impurity, not from a wet dream, and then he would fast."So we set out and went to Marwan, and Abdul-Rahman mentioned it to him.Marwan said, "I insist that you go to Abu Hurairah and refute what he is saying."So we came to Abu Hurairah, with Abu Bakr present throughout, and Abdul-Rahman mentioned it to him.Abu Hurairah asked, "Did the two of them say this to you?"He replied, "Yes."Abu Hurairah said, "They know better."Then Abu Hurairah traced what he had been saying about this back to Fadl bin Abbas, and said, "I heard it from Fadl, I did not hear it from the Prophet ﷺ."So Abu Hurairah retracted what he had been saying on this matter.I asked Abdul-Malik, "Did they say this concerning Ramadan?"He answered, "Yes, that is how it was. He would enter the morning in a state of major ritual impurity, not from a wet dream, and then he would fast."
حدثني محمد بن حاتم حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن ابن جريج ح و حدثني محمد بن رافع واللفظ له حدثنا عبد الرزاق بن همام أخبرنا ابن جريج أخبرني عبد الملك بن أبي بكر بن عبد الرحمن عن أبي بكر قال سمعت
في قصصه من أدركه الفجر جنبا فلا يصم فذكرت ذلك لعبد الرحمن بن الحارث لأبيه فأنكر ذلك فانطلق عبد الرحمن وانطلقت معه حتى دخلنا على عائشة وأم سلمة رضي الله عنهما فسألهما عبد الرحمن عن ذلك قال فكلتاهما قالت كان النبي ﷺ يصبح جنبا من غير حلم ثم يصوم قال فانطلقنا حتى دخلنا على مروان فذكر ذلك له عبد الرحمن فقال مروان عزمت عليك إلا ما ذهبت إلى أبي هريرة فرددت عليه ما يقول قال فجئنا أبا هريرة وأبو بكر حاضر ذلك كله قال فذكر له عبد الرحمن فقال أبو هريرة أهما قالتاه لك قال نعم قال هما أعلم ثم رد أبو هريرة ما كان يقول في ذلك إلى الفضل بن العباس فقال أبو هريرة سمعت ذلك من الفضل ولم أسمعه من النبي ﷺ قال فرجع أبو هريرة عما كان يقول في ذلك قلت لعبد الملك أقالتا في رمضان قال كذلك كان يصبح جنبا من غير حلم ثم يصوم
