A man from Banu Udhrah freed a slave of his by means of tadbir, meaning the slave would become free upon his master's death. News of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he asked, "Do you have any property other than him?"The man replied, "No."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Who will buy him from me?"Naeem bin Abdullah al-Adawi bought him for eight hundred dirhams, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ brought the money and handed it to the man, saying, "Begin with yourself and spend it on your own needs. If anything is left over, then on your family. If anything remains beyond your family's needs, then on your relatives. If anything remains beyond your relatives' needs, then like this and like this," gesturing in front of him, to his right, and to his left.
