The sun was eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a day of intense heat. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led his companions in prayer, prolonging the standing until they began to collapse. Then he bowed for a long time, then rose for a long time, then bowed again for a long time, then rose again for a long time, then performed two prostrations. Then he stood and did much the same as before. So there were four bowings and four prostrations.Then he said, "Everything you will enter has been shown to me. Paradise was shown to me, so much so that had I reached out for a cluster of its fruit, I would have taken it." Or he said, "I reached out for a cluster of it, but my hand fell short of it. And the Fire was shown to me, and I saw in it a woman from the Children of Israil being punished on account of a cat she had tied up, neither feeding it nor letting it eat from the creatures of the earth. And I saw Abu Thumama Amr bin Malik dragging his entrails in the Fire.""They used to say that the sun and the moon are eclipsed only for the death of a great person. But they are two signs among the signs of Allah, which He shows you. So when they are eclipsed, pray until they become clear again."
و حدثني يعقوب بن إبراهيم الدورقي حدثنا إسمعيل ابن علية عن هشام الدستوائي قال حدثنا أبو الزبير
كسفت الشمس على عهد رسول الله ﷺ في يوم شديد الحر فصلى رسول الله ﷺ بأصحابه فأطال القيام حتى جعلوا يخرون ثم ركع فأطال ثم رفع فأطال ثم ركع فأطال ثم رفع فأطال ثم سجد سجدتين ثم قام فصنع نحوا من ذاك فكانت أربع ركعات وأربع سجدات ثم قال إنه عرض علي كل شيء تولجونه فعرضت علي الجنة حتى لو تناولت منها قطفا أخذته أو قال تناولت منها قطفا فقصرت يدي عنه وعرضت علي النار فرأيت فيها امرأة من بني إسرائيل تعذب في هرة لها ربطتها فلم تطعمها ولم تدعها تأكل من خشاش الأرض ورأيت أبا ثمامة عمرو بن مالك يجر قصبه في النار وإنهم كانوا يقولون إن الشمس والقمر لا يخسفان إلا لموت عظيم وإنهما آيتان من آيات الله يريكموهما فإذا خسفا فصلوا حتى تنجلي
