The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to go out on the day of Adha and the day of Fitr and begin with the prayer. When he had completed his prayer and given the salam, he would stand and face the people while they remained seated in their place of prayer. If he had a military expedition to send out, he would mention it to the people, or if he had some other matter to address, he would instruct them about it. He used to say, "Give in charity, give in charity, give in charity," and most of those who gave were the women. Then he would depart. This continued to be the practice until the time of Marwan bin Hakam. I went out walking hand in hand with Marwan until we reached the place of prayer, and there was Kathir bin Salt, who had built a pulpit of clay and bricks. Marwan began pulling his hand away from mine, as though he were drawing me toward the pulpit, while I was pulling him toward the prayer. When I saw this from him, I said, "What happened to beginning with the prayer?"He replied, "No, Abu Saeed, what you know has been abandoned."I said, "Not at all. By the One in whose hand my soul is, you will not bring anything better than what I know," three times. Then I departed.
