Ammar delivered a sermon to us that was brief yet eloquent. When he stepped down, we said, "Abu al-Yaqzan, you spoke eloquently and concisely. If only you had spoken at greater length."He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'A man's lengthening his prayer and shortening his sermon is a sign of his understanding. So make the prayer long and the sermon short, for indeed some eloquence is like magic.'"
حدثني سريج بن يونس حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن عبد الملك بن أبجر عن أبيه عن واصل بن حيان قال قال
خطبنا عمار فأوجز وأبلغ فلما نزل قلنا يا أبا اليقظان لقد أبلغت وأوجزت فلو كنت تنفست فقال إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إن طول صلاة الرجل وقصر خطبته مئنة من فقهه فأطيلوا الصلاة واقصروا الخطبة وإن من البيان سحرا
Muslim narrated the hadith of Ibn Abjar, from Wasil, from Abu Waail, from Ammar, from the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him and his family, "The length of a man's prayer and the shortness of his sermon are a sign of his understanding of the religion."Bukhari said, this hadith was narrated uniquely by Ibn Abjar from Wasil. It was transmitted from him by his son Abdul-Rahman and by Saeed bin Bashir. Amash contradicted him, and Amash has a better memory of the hadith of Abu Waail than he does. Amash narrated it from Abu Waail, from Amr bin Shurahbil, from Abdullah, as his own statement, not as a raised hadith from the Prophet. This was stated by Thawri and others, narrating from Amash.
