It is reported from one who prayed the Prayer of Fear with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Dhat al-Riqa that one group lined up with him while another group faced the enemy. He led those with him in one rakah, then remained standing while they completed the prayer for themselves. They then withdrew and took their position facing the enemy, and the other group came forward. He led them in the remaining rakah, then remained seated while they completed the prayer for themselves, after which he gave the closing salam with them.
Both of them (Bukhari and Muslim) narrated the hadith of Malik, from Yazid bin Ruman, from Salih bin Khawwat, from one who prayed with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. They also both narrated it through Shubah, from Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim, from his father, from Salih, from Sahl bin Abu Hathma, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.Bukhari alone narrated it through Yahya bin Saeed, from Qasim, from Salih, from Sahl, as a stopped report (mawquf).
Hafiz, may Allah have mercy on him, said in the introduction to Fath al-Bari, p. 369, after mentioning Daraqutni's statement,I say, there is another disagreement regarding Salih, for it was said, on his authority, from his father. This is the narration of Abu Uways from Yazid bin Ruman, which Ibn Manda recorded in Marifah. It is therefore possible that this explains the unnamed person in Malik's narration. As for the conflict between the raised and stopped versions in the hadith of Sahl, the raised version is well known from him. And Allah knows best.
