The Prophet ﷺ came to him and Fatimah at night and said, "Will you not pray?"Ali replied, "Messenger of Allah, our souls are in Allah's hand. When He wishes to wake us, He wakes us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away when I said that to him. Then I heard him, as he was leaving, striking his thigh and saying, "But man is, more than anything, given to disputing" [Kahf 18:54].
و حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد حدثنا ليث عن عقيل عن الزهري عن علي بن حسين أن الحسين بن علي حدثه
أن النبي ﷺ طرقه وفاطمة فقال ألا تصلون فقلت يا رسول الله إنما أنفسنا بيد الله فإذا شاء أن يبعثنا بعثنا فانصرف رسول الله ﷺ حين قلت له ذلك ثم سمعته وهو مدبر يضرب فخذه ويقول {وكان الإنسان أكثر شيء جدلا}
Muslim narrated the hadith of Qutayba, from Layth, from Aqeel, from Zuhri, from Ali bin Husayn, from Hasan bin Ali, from Ali, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, came to him and Fatimah at night.Muslim's narration from Qutayba was corroborated by Hanafi and Ibrahim bin Nasr Nahawandi, but Musa, Nasai, and Sarraj differed from them in narrating from Qutayba, except that Musa said, "He narrated it to us not from a written text," though in his own book it was written "Hasan bin Ali."Abu Salih, Hamza bin Ziyad, and Walid bin Salih narrated it from Layth, and they said in it "Hasan bin Ali." Yunus the tutor, Abu Nadr, and others narrated from Layth, "Husayn bin Ali," and likewise the companions of Zuhri said, among them Salih bin Kaysan, Ibn Abu Atiq, Ibn Jurayj, Ishaq bin Rashid, Zayd bin Abu Unaysa, Shuayb, Hakeem bin Hakeem, Yahya bin Abu Unaysa, and Aqeel (as narrated by Ibn Lahia from him), Abdul-Rahman bin Ishaq, Ubaydullah bin Abu Ziyad, and others.As for Muammar, he narrated it in mursal form from Zuhri, from Ali bin Husayn.The statement of those who said, from Layth, "Hasan bin Ali," is a mistake, and Allah knows best.
