I asked Ata, "What is the time you most prefer for praying isha, which people call atamah, whether leading others or praying alone?"He replied, "I heard Ibn Abbas say, 'The Prophet of Allah ﷺ delayed the isha prayer one night until people had fallen asleep and woken up, fallen asleep and woken up again. Then Umar bin Khattab stood and called out, "The prayer!"'"Ata continued, "Ibn Abbas said, 'The Prophet of Allah ﷺ then came out, and it is as though I am looking at him now, water dripping from his head, his hand placed on one side of his head. He said, "Were it not that it would burden my community, I would have ordered them to pray it at this time."'"I asked Ata to clarify exactly how the Prophet ﷺ had placed his hand on his head, as Ibn Abbas had described. Ata spread his fingers apart slightly, then placed the tips of his fingers on the top of his head, drawing them down across the head until his thumb touched the edge of the ear nearest the face, then over the temple and along the side of the beard, neither hurrying nor pressing firmly, but moving in just that manner.I asked Ata, "How late did he mention the Prophet ﷺ delayed it that night?"He answered, "I do not know."Ata said, "I prefer to pray it delayed, whether leading others or praying alone, just as the Prophet ﷺ prayed it that night. But if that is too difficult for you when praying alone, or for the people in congregation when you are leading them, then pray it at a middle time, neither hastened nor delayed."
و حدثنا محمد بن رافع حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا
قلت لعطاء أي حين أحب إليك أن أصلي العشاء التي يقولها الناس العتمة إماما وخلوا قال سمعت ابن عباس يقولا أعتم نبي الله ﷺ ذات ليلة العشاء قال حتى رقد ناس واستيقظوا ورقدوا واستيقظوا فقام عمر بن الخطاب فقال الصلاة فقال عطاء قال ابن عباس فخرج نبي الله ﷺ كأني أنظر إليه الآن يقطر رأسه ماء واضعا يده على شق رأسه قال لولا أن يشق على أمتي لأمرتهم أن يصلوها كذلك قال فاستثبت عطاء كيف وضع النبي ﷺ يده على رأسه كما أنبأه ابن عباس فبدد لي عطاء بين أصابعه شيئا من تبديد ثم وضع أطراف أصابعه على قرن الرأس ثم صبها يمرها كذلك على الرأس حتى مست إبهامه طرف الأذن مما يلي الوجه ثم على الصدغ وناحية اللحية لا يقصر ولا يبطش بشيء إلا كذلك قلت لعطاء كم ذكر لك أخرها النبي ﷺ ليلتئذ قال لا أدري قال عطاء أحب إلي أن أصليها إماما وخلوا مؤخرة كما صلاها النبي ﷺ ليلتئذ فإن شق عليك ذلك خلوا أو على الناس في الجماعة وأنت إمامهم فصلها وسطا لا معجلة ولا مؤخرة
